 | Dear Miss Mae,
I LOVE YOUR BASKETS! I will be in the Charleston
area this summer and would love to find out
where you are located. I have been collecting
sweetgrass baskets for about 20 years and my
husband things we are being over run by them.
But all I have to do is pick one up, smell the
grass and it takes me back to Charleston just as
if we are still there.
Anyway, imagine my surprise when one day I
walked into a Goodwill Store and saw TWO
sweetgrass baskets for $0.99 each. I grabbed
those quickly. When I was checking out, I told
the cashier a bit about them. One had a bit of
damage to the outside rim which I don't think
would be hard to fix. But you are the first
"basket hospital" we have found. So as
soon as I can, I will be sending you one or two
baskets to be "healed".
Thank you for sharing your craft with us all.
Yours truly,
Mary VanderWall

Just wanted to pass on the note to the
artist. We received the bread basket for
the wedding. The bride is absolutely
delighted. She always likes to support
local artists .... she will be using the basket
to carry long stem roses in a dance during the
wedding ceremony....Your basket means so much to
her....thank you ! -Victoria

Mae,
I just got back home to Michigan from seeing my
parrents in Walterbouro S. C. I saw Sweetgrass
baskets for the first time. What a wonderful
art! I was lucky enough to up a small one in a
consginment shop in low country. I wanted to
stop at a roadside stand, but my dad drives like
he is going to a fire all the time. I just had
to have a nice larger one. WHAT a nice surprise
to find your web site. -Linda

Over ten years ago my Mama purchased a beautiful
sweetgrass basket, which I still have in my
possession -- It is one of the most
valued treasures of African-American heritage and
art in our home.
